The J.W. & H.M. Goodman Foundation seeks to express its loyalty and commitment to those individuals and organizations that had a positive impact on the lives of the grantors and to explore and support important and necessary programs that improve the quality of life.

Funding Interests

The foundation wishes to support programs that are in alignment with its core values, including:

  • Community outreach to improving the quality of life by helping organizations that aid the poor and disadvantaged
  • Education, with a particular emphasis on equal access
  • Environmental conservation programs that seek to improve long-term quality of life and a healthy ecosystem through such activities as education
  • The arts, as a way of preserving culture, stimulating the intellect, and improving the quality and enjoyment of life

Geographic Focus

Priority will be given to organizations in California (Bay Area), Oregon (Greater Portland area) and Washington; however, national and international issues will be considered.

Types of Support

Project, operating, and capital requests will be considered.

Grant Size

$500 to $10000

Requirements & Limitations

The foundation funds only nonprofit organizations, as determined by Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Application Process

The foundation requests that the organization sends three copies of the letter of inquiry. The letter of inquiry should be no longer than two pages and should address the guidelines posted on the foundation's website.


The deadline for Letters of Inquiry for the 2008 Fall cycle will be June 1, 2008. The foundation will invite a select number of organizations to submit grant proposals. Invited organizations will have approximately two months to submit a grant proposal for review at the next board meeting.

Purpose: To support the Healthy Waters Institute.

Grant 2

Grantee: Columbia Land Trust, Vancouver, WA
Amount: $5000

To support the Cathlamet Bay Island Project.

Grant 3

Grantee: Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, Hillsboro, OR
Amount: $5000

To support construction of the Wetlands Education Center for science education programs.
